Review:
Karen Kornhauser of Asheville Reporting Service was quite helpful all the way, as was her associate Ed, once I had made it to their offices. Actually, 4.6, if you allowed. There was confusion about billing. Mr. Ed Diaz suggested that I pay and seek reimbursement though Karen had explicitly told me by phone that all I needed to provide at time of service was a complete billing address. Fortunately, Ed did not question that and even helped me access my email from his office so that I could retrieve that address (which had been sent to me after I left home for Asheville). I must admit too that I was a bit confused about another billing matter. Because an "IP to ISDN bridge" was needed, a company in Dallas, Texas ("Connexus"?) had to be brought in. I understood that but because I, at first, thought (mistakenly, I admit) that this VC had to be held on a Sunday, Karen seemed to be telling me that I had to make the arrangements with that company myself. And, in deed, I called that company and learned much more about this "bridge" technology. But that company's phone rep, "Terri," seemed just as confused as me as to why I was directly calling her. (She did assure me, however, that her company was prepared - at a price - to connect anyone to anyone at any time of day.) Further, I was a bit disappointed by the quality of the synchronous transmission. Moving heads "pixelated" - sometimes for many seconds. (I didn't time it.) And, several times, voices were scrambled. Perhaps this was a "natural" drawback to the use of a "bridge." Still, I think we deserved warning. Indeed, I can almost achieve that level of quality via my home PC and DSL. The people in Hong Kong seemed to take this in stride, however. They are probably much more accustomed than I to this. All that said, I must turn about and say that I was delighted and grateful that Karen could accommodate us (on a Monday night) on same-day notice. It is quite possible that the personal contact and end-to-end assistance that Karen and her professional kind provide will, as the technology for do-it-yourself VC'ing improves, be the major factor that keeps commercial VC services alive.
